By a two-to-one margin, respondents to a Copresco digital color survey of 1400 graphic arts professionals voted for the Xerox Docucolor 2060 as the digital press rendering the best quality.
The survey was conducted by the Carol Stream, Ill. printer to
determine the future purchase of digital color presses. The firm asked
customers to compare the quality of two company newsletters and vote
for the press they believe produced the best color. One newsletter
version was digitally printed on the Docucolor 2060; the other on an
Indigo E-Print Pro Plus.
Respondents considered the overall quality of the press to reproduce
colored and black and white text, background tints and color gradients,
colored graphics and scanned photos.
“We knew our customers were highly knowledgeable graphic arts
professionals,” says Copresco president Steve
Johnson. “Seventy-five percent of the respondents indicated
previous on-demand color experience. Ninety seven percent of those
declared familiarity with Xerox and/or Indigo output.”
Copresco has been producing
on-demand black and white books and manuals since 1987 and is now in
the process of upgrading its high-end digital color equipment. “We want
a digital press that produces pleasing color and can meet our extremely
demanding time frame criteria. We’re also looking for a supplier that
is as committed as we are to continual improvement of the whole digital
workflow process,” Johnson explained.
As a books and manuals printer, the company also needs a press that
offers quick, easy setup, variable data flexibility and can handle a
wide range of book papers.
After narrowing the choices to two front-runners, Copresco decided to
ask its customers and suppliers to participate in the decision-making
process via the survey.
“The establishment of a color press standard is an important element of
our continuing commitment to exceptional quality, fast turnaround and
personalized service. The survey input will be the most important
factor in our selection of a digital press,” he added.
“We will make our final decision soon and establish an equipment
standard that matches the quality of our black and white work. The new
digital color printer will then take its place next to our five
Docutech 6180s,” Johnson concluded.
Copresco specializes in digital on-demand printing of publications,
books and manuals for clients in the general business, printing trade,
technical and institutional fields.
